Free Range Eggs

Church Farm hens are free to forage from dawn to dusk in Vicar’s Orchard. The small flock and low stocking density encourages the birds to range and allows freedom of expression and a fullness of life. They enjoy an environment that is close to their natural woodland habitat and can forage, scratch and hunt insects to supplement their diet.

There are five varieties of hens at the farm: Light Sussex, Cuckoo Maran, Black Rock, White Leghorn and Rhode Island Red.

Recent tests have shown eggs from chickens that range freely on pasture provide clear nutritional benefits over eggs from confinement operations including:

  • 1/3 less cholesterol than commercial eggs
  • 1/4 less saturated fat & 2/3 more vitamin A
  • 2 times more omega-3 fatty acids
  • 7 times more beta carotene
